PostHeaderIcon Affordable and Intensive One Day Rally School and RallyX

For the 15th consecutive year, the California Rally Series is presenting the CRS Rally School on Saturday, February 18 with the Ridgecrest RallyX, rally cross event, the following day on Sunday, February 19.

The School’s goal has always been to present an affordable and convenient way for people to get off to a great start in the sport. The 8-hour class is packed with information and covers topics including: car prep, timing, stage notes, team management, and rally driving techniques. There is also plenty of seat time for drivers/riders and co-drivers on practice courses designed to give them the "feel" of real competition. Experienced rally competitors will ride along with you and show you how to use the practice areas to develop and hone both driving and co-driving skills.

Students must provide their own vehicle for the driving practice but any standard street vehicle is acceptable. Properly equipped vehicles will be provided for the co-driver practice sessions. Two or more students may share one car for both the school and the Sunday rally cross. A helmet with a Snell 90 or newer sticker is required for the driver's practice.

The Ridgecrest RallyX is a timed, speed event where competitors race both street stock and prepared cars and trucks around a coned closed course in a huge dirt lot. The tight course controls the vehicle’s speed while making driver control and skill a greater factor than raw horsepower. The RallyX is open to almost any vehicle meeting the minimum requirements. Drivers must be at least 16 years of age and minors must have a parent or legal guardian present to participate.

The school’s enrollment fee is only $120. Your entry includes a "working sack lunch" Saturday afternoon and Mexican buffet Saturday night. along with an extensive set of classroom materials. Entry in the Ridgecrest Rallycross on the following day can be added to the enrollment fee for only $20 more. Regular entry to the Rallycross is $40. Both events take place in Ridgecrest, California. Complete details and online registration can be found at http://CRSRallySchool.com.

PostHeaderIcon 2011 California Rally Series concludes at the Seed 9 Rally

Los Angeles – Thirteen teams took the start of the Seed 9 rally on November 5, 2011, based in Jean, NV. The rally consisted of thirty-five miles of dirt roads, starting in the afternoon and finishing after nightfall. Seed 9 marked the return of Bill Holmes and Sean Gallagher in a new large-displacement two wheel-drive class (CRS-5) Ford Raptor, after sitting out most of the season. The team was definitely not rusty, as they managed to win every stage and take the overall victory for the second year in a row at Seed 9.

Third overall and first in the production-based four wheel-drive class (CRS-GT) was Scott Crouch in his Subaru WRX. He drove a solid race, but was unable to make any headway into Holmes’ lead after dark as dust hung in the still night air and reduced visibility for everyone but the leader who was first on the road.

The closest battle of the day was in the small-displacement two wheel-drive class (CRS-2), where three teams were trading times throughout the event. After the final stage, preliminary results showed Tony Chavez and Raquel Salas taking the class win by just one second over Javier Olivares and Brock Heinz. However, Chavez/Salas were hit with a twenty second penalty for checking in late on the last transit, giving Olivares/Heinz the victory. Chuck Wilson and Brent Ellzey slotted into second place, only sixteen seconds back.

In the production-based two wheel-drive class (P-Stock), Rene and Sandra de la Trinidad took the class win. The victory capped off a weekend that started with them getting married in nearby Las Vegas the night before the rally.

The Seed 9 rally marked the conclusion of the 2011 CRS rally championship. Taking first place this season among the open four wheel-drive drivers was Jon Burke, thanks to wins in Idaho and North Nevada. He edged out Dick Rockrohr, who also had a win in North Nevada earlier this season. Among the co-drivers in this class, Laurence Babahekian finished first overall, with Mustafa Samli in the runner-up spot.

In CRS-5, team-mates Brian Hamblin and Ray Hocker finished as the top driver and co-driver respectively. Ray won the (now defunct) stock class as a driver twenty-five years ago, but this marks his first CRS class title as a co-driver.

CRS-2 was the most popular class of 2011, with over 35 participants this year. Michel Hoche-Mong claimed his first CRS class driver title in the hotly contested class, with Chuck Wilson taking second by a narrow margin over Javier Olivares in third. Brent Ellzey finished first among co-drivers thanks to his third place finish at Seed 9. Thomas Smith was closely behind in second place, followed by Brock Heinz in third.

In CRS-GT, last year’s P-Stock champion Alex Rademacher took the drivers victory in his Subaru after converting it from two wheel-drive to four wheel-drive in the off season. Second place went to Katiana Pihakari, while Kris-Jon Lyssand claimed third. Jeana Yi took the top spot among co-drivers, with Joshua Rodriguez in second and John Dillon taking third.

Jen Imai claimed the class win in P-Stock, over 2009 winner John Black thanks to victories in Idaho and Mendocino. Imai’s co-driver Terry Stonecipher also took top honors, with Lori Stone finishing in second place.

In the CRS Moto Championship, John Black claims the victory in the under 800cc class, the only class that had motorcycle competitors this year.

The 2011 Seed 9 rally is based in Jean, NV and features stages on maintained gravel roads with some rocky areas, sandy washes and exposures. The compact schedule sends competitors over 40 stage miles, finishing at the historic Pioneer Saloon in Goodsprings, NV. For more information on the Seed 9 rally, visit: http://www.seed9rally.com/.

PostHeaderIcon Close Competition at the Mendocino Rally Shakes Up the California Rally Series Leaderboards

Los Angeles – Performance rally returned to Northern California after a nearly thirty year hiatus with the Mendocino Rally on August 6th, 2011. Fourteen teams took the start, competing on over fifty miles of hard packed dirt roads outside of Ukiah, CA. Competitors were delighted with the smooth stages that featured challenging tight and twisty corners.

Former two-time Belgian Rally Champion David Sterckx made his California Rally Series debut at Mendocino. Sterckx teamed up with CRS veteran co-driver Karen Jankowski to compete in the Open four-wheel drive class. The team got off to an impressive start in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, winning the first five stages to build up a formidable lead of almost two minutes. However, a slipping clutch forced their retirement at the start of stage 6, despite the best efforts of their fellow competitors to push the car forward at the uphill start.

After the retirement of Sterckx/Jankowski, the team of Alex Rademacher and Jeanna Yi moved into the lead in their Subaru 2.5 RS. They held on to the lead for the remaining stages and went on to finish in first place. The win marks Rademacher and Yi’s first overall victory, and is even more impressive considering the team drove all the way from Reno, NV and back home again in their rally car packed full of spares! Their maximum points finish moves them into the season points lead in the production-based four-wheel drive CRS-GT class. Looking towards the next event, Katianna Pihakari will be fighting to reclaim the championship lead back from Rademacher at the Gorman Ridge Rally on August 27, 2011.

The small-displacement two-wheel drive CRS-2 class was once again the class to watch at Mendocino, with more than two-thirds of the field competing in this popular class. Fighting for the class win were George Doganis and Tom Smith in their Honda Civic versus son and father Tim and Dick Moser in their VW Golf. These two teams were locked in battle at the last event (North Nevada Rally) before the Mosers were forced to retire with a heater core failure and overheating issues. The close racing continued at Mendocino, with the two teams tying on the first stage with the exact same finishing time. Over the first six stages, only seconds separated the two teams, with the advantage going to Doganis/Smith. However, a broken axle on the very last stage forced the Mosers to retire. Doganis/Smith went on to take the class win (and second place overall), which bumps them up into first place in CRS-2. Collecting second place points in CRS-2 were Andrew and Robin Lockhart in their VW Golf, approximately a minute and a half behind Doganis/Smith.

Competition in CRS-2 will see some familiar faces getting back on the stages at the Gorman Ridge Rally. Michel Hoche-Mong and Marie Boyd will be competing in their VW Golf and are expected to be competitive after their third place overall finish at Gorman last year. Also returning is Chuck Wilson in his Ford Escort, after retiring at North Nevada with mechanical issues. Javier Olivares and Brock Heinz, who currently sit in second place will also be competing at Gorman, hoping to collect enough points to propel them into first.

Jen Imai and Terry Stonecipher were the lone competitors in the two-wheel drive production based Performance Stock (“P-Stock”) class at Mendocino. They finished a respectable ninth overall and claimed maximum points helping them extend their class lead. John Black and co-driver Lori Stone are currently sitting in second place in the P-Stock class, and will be looking to put a dent in Imai/Stonecipher’s lead at the Gorman Ridge Rally.

After being absent from the last few events, the large-displacement two-wheel drive CRS-5 class will see some action at the Gorman Ridge Rally. Bill Holmes and Sean Gallagher will be competing in their Ford F-150. Despite being only rear wheel drive, Holmes and Gallagher are traditionally the team to watch at Gorman, finishing second overall last year.

Also at the top end of the field at Gorman will be the Subarus of Jon Burke and Doug Chernis with co-driver Craig MacNair. Burke is currently second in the Open four-wheel drive class, and can move into first with a strong finish at Gorman.

The 2011 Mendocino Rally is based in Ukiah, CA and marked a return of rally to Northern California after a nearly thirty year hiatus. The rally featured 54 miles of hard-packed twisty stages contained within the South Cow Mountain off-road vehicle park. For more information on the Mendocino Rally visit http://www.mendocinorally.com.

The 2011 Gorman Ridge Rally is based in Lebec, CA, located just one hour north of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The rally features 60 miles of hard-packed dirt stages located within the Hungry Valley Off-Road Vehicle park. For more information on the Gorman Ridge Rally visit http://gormanridgerally.com/.

PostHeaderIcon Exciting North Nevada Rally brings California Rally Series Season to its Halfway Point

Los Angeles – The California Rally Series returned to northern Nevada for a two-day rally July 8 & 9, 2011. Twenty teams took the start of Friday’s rally, which was run on smooth, twisty roads near Lovelock, NV. The rally began in the late afternoon and continued into the evening, running the final four stages in darkness. On Saturday, the teams ran faster, flowing stages near Gerlach, NV with the rally running from mid-morning to near dusk. Despite the smooth stages, only seven teams made it to the finish on Saturday, with mechanical problems and some off-road excursions claiming over half the field.

The open four-wheel drive class turned into a battle between the Subarus of Dick Rockrohr and Jon Burke. Rockrohr withdrew from Friday’s event when hanging dust made driving conditions after dark especially dodgy. Burke and his co-driver Tucker Heiner continued on to claim top points in class for Friday’s rally. Their luck would not continue on Saturday, as an off road excursion on stage two resulted in a bent control arm, and the team was forced to withdraw. It was smooth sailing for Rockrohr, however, who led the rally overall from start to finish on Saturday. With Saturday’s win, Rockrohr bumps Burke out of the lead in the season standings.

George Doganis and Tom Smith were once again flying in their Honda Civic. The team finished on the overall podium both days, beating many turbo, four-wheel drive cars, despite being in the CRS-2 class for small displacement two wheel drive vehicles. Everyone anticipated close competition in the CRS-2 class between Doganis/Smith and the son and father team of Tim and Dick Moser, but the Moser’s VW Golf blew its heater core on the fourth stage, spraying hot coolant on Dick and forcing the team to withdraw for the remaining evening stages. Javier Olivares and Brock Heinz picked up second place points in CRS-2 for Friday’s event, but did not start Saturday’s event due to a wheel bearing that was precariously close to failing. Meanwhile, the team of Chuck Wilson and Brent Ellzey had to park their Ford Escort after stage 6 on Friday with transmission problems and were unable to continue. Looking at the current class standings, North Nevada Rally organizer Michel Hoche-Mong moves into the class lead in the CRS-2 driver’s championship with the help of his organizer points. Meanwhile, Doganis jumps up into second place, bumping Olivarez down to third. For co-drivers, Smith comes out of the weekend with the season points lead, knocking Heinz down to second place and Ellzey to third.

The production-based four-wheel drive CRS-GT saw close competition all weekend. The team of Kris-Jon Lyssand and Joshua Rodriguez traded stage times all night Friday with Alex Rademacher and Jeanna Yi. By the end of the last stage on Friday, only six seconds separated the teams in their Subarus, with the victory going to Lyssand/Rodriguez. Saturday’s stages seemed to suit Rademacher/Yi better, and the team managed to build a lead of over a minute on Lyssand/Rodriguez going into the final stage. However, Lyssand/Rodriguez were pushing perhaps a bit too hard, and suffered a big roll when they went off the road into a wash on the final stage. Katianna Pihakari went into the weekend with the points lead in CRS-GT. She teamed up with veteran co-driver Sean Gallagher and managed a third place finish in Friday’s event. However, an off-road excursion left their Subaru high-centered on the second stage Saturday, causing them to DNF. Pihakari’s finish on Friday was sufficient to maintain her class lead in the driver’s championship, although Rademacher leapfrogged Lyssand to move into second. Yi earned enough points to top the co-drivers standings, with Rodriguez currently sitting in second place.

The next event on the calendar is the Mendocino Rally on August 6, based in Ukiah, CA. This rally is new to the CRS for 2011, and celebrates a return of rally to the region after an almost thirty year hiatus. The twisty, technical stages are contained within the South Cow Mountain off-road vehicle park, and feature a wide, hard packed dirt surface. Sixteen teams are currently entered, and competition is shaping up to be electrifying. With new, twisty stages and teams limited to route-book only instructions (no stage notes), expect driving and road-reading skills to trump experience and horsepower.

John Burke is the current open four-wheel drive class favorite, and will be looking to reclaim the points lead after relinquishing it in North Nevada. In CRS-2, Tim and Dick Moser will be back in their VW Golf, and looking for a problem-free rematch against George Doganis and Tom Smith. Javier Olivares and Brock Heinz are also on the entry list and will be there to keep these two teams honest. Alex Rademacher and Jeanna Yi are currently the only team entered in the CRS-GT class, giving Alex an opportunity to move into the class lead in the driver’s champtionship.
